Review of 2014 – ITEC’s 30th Anniversary!

ITEC 1984-2014 and still going strong!   #Essex #Apprenticeships

Review of 2014 – our 30th Anniversary!

As a not-for-profit, community-based training provider, we made the decision to celebrate our 30th Anniversary by fund-raising to support 3 local charities; Be Child Cancer Aware, the Indee Rose Trust and the Hamelin Trust.   Be Child Cancer Aware and the Indee Rose Trust provide active support for families and children affected by childhood cancers. The Hamelin Trust supports disabled people both in the community and by providing residential care.   Our fund-raising has been actively supported by the Bowers Gifford Football & Social Club, who have let us use their club room (and their hallowed turf) to hold all our events. Special thanks to Clair, Mike and their team at the Club, we couldn’t have done it without their support.   Clair and her team have organised some fantastic buffets for our events and we’ve received lots of positive comments (and requests for seconds!)

December 2013 – we released a special edition 2014 calendar with photos and highlights from the past 30 years. The calendar went out to friends, colleagues, clients and employers – anyone who wanted to celebrate this milestone with us!Geminis

Set up in December 1983, ITEC formally opened its doors to learners on 1st February 1984. Some of our very first learners have been back to visit in 2014 and it has been wonderful to see them all fully grown with good careers and blossoming families of their own.

February 2014 – we held a Charity Quiz at the Club based on 1984. All the rounds and questions were about events, films, books, etc., that were released or happened in 1984.   The turnout for the evening was fantastic and our winners were the ‘Thought Police’, with ‘Sub Culture’ coming in for a close second place!   Sum raised £580. To round off events, we are running a charity quiz at the Club on 5th February 2015 and these teams are returning to defend their titles!

Julie Leitch Hamper winnerApril 2014 – We dedicated our annual awards evening to the charities and all learners, parents and employers that attended the awards evening donated £1 to the fund-raising. Local businesses sponsored the award categories and a fund-raising raffle was held, with prizes donated by our employers.   Sum raised £278.

A special prize was donated by ATL Transport of Tilbury in the form of a Fortnum & Mason hamper.   Prize draw tickets were sold during February and March for this prize and the winner, Julie Leitch of the ISS Youth Offending Team, was drawn at the Awards Evening.  Sum raised £310.

Our guests selected the winner of our ITEC Beach Ball photo competition and the winner, Alan Vickers, donated his prize money to the charity pot. Sum raised £250.

The staff presented our CEO, Wendy Vickers, with a special award celebrating her 30 years’ service with ITEC. Wendy started as a trainer in December 1983, the most junior member of the staff at just 22 years of age. 30 years later, Wendy has worked her way up through the ranks to the top spot and is still enjoying her work at ITEC. “Every year is different”, she enthuses, “it’s rewarding to see all the learners achieve and grow while on their courses at ITEC! Many stay in touch, even 30 years later!”Team 1

May 2014 – ITEC sponsored a category at the Basildon Council Staff Awards in honour of our 30th Anniversary and went to the Towngate to present our award to the winner!   Also in May, Stephen Metcalfe, our local MP, came to ITEC for a visit to see what we are doing for the community and for apprenticeships in the local area. Stephen was very positive about everything we are trying to achieve and has supported us with requesting clarity on the new apprenticeship reforms. Amanda made some 30th anniversary cup cakes and sold them to raise funds.   Sum raised £16.90

The ITEC Quiz Team entered the RAFA Charity Quiz at Bowers Gifford Football and Social Club, winning the event and donating the prize money to the pot. Sum raised £30.

June 2014 – Our Reunion Party was held at the Club in early June. We had a fantastic DJ, a raffle and a beautiful buffet laid on by Clair and her team. Some of our old learners turned up to support us and it was wonderful to see how they’ve progressed and what they are doing now. So, special thank you’s to all those old-ITEC’ers who turned out to support us!   Sum raised £160.

Basildon Business AwardsJuly 2014 – ITEC sponsored the Business Woman of the Year Award at the Basildon Business Awards. There were 4 finalists, who were all fantastic business women and very positive role models for ITEC’s IT Girls, and it was very, very hard to select a winner. After much deliberation we selected Selena Baylis from Northlands Park and Laindon Nurseries, as our very worthy winner. Well done, Selena!

We ran a charity sweepstake for the FIFA World Cup, held in Brazil.   Sum raised £64.

September 2014 – We held a charity football match at the club, where we saw the apprentices take on their line managers. It was a highly successful evening, enjoyed by players and spectators alike. The line managers won 2-1 but the apprentices are calling for a re-match in 2015, so watch this space!  Sum raised £1123.47

December 2014 – We held a couple of Christmas Jumper days to boost the fund-raising a little. The learners got into the spirit of things and a few Christmas hats appeared with the jumpers! No full elf costumes made it to ITEC this year though!   Sum raised £25.

Total Sum raised so far is £2837.37

So here we are, January 2015, just about to go into our 31st year!   There are lots of changes are coming our way especially with the apprenticeship reforms. We have a fantastic team at ITEC, who are motivated and positive about the future. They are passionate about teaching and want to share their knowledge with all the learners coming through ITEC.

Are you ready for 2015?? Bring IT on!!IMG_0716
